With that in mind, what are some of the most common things you’ll want to keep an eye out for? What are some key do’s and don’ts of getting a smart home security system? Let’s see.

Things You Should Definitely Do

Once you’ve set things up, you should set up a schedule. Chances are you have a good idea of when you’re going to work, and when you’d be coming back, and a schedule can take care of a lot of things for you. It can automatically lock your door when it knows you’ve left, for example. If you’re going on a vacation, it can turn on the lights in your living room at specified times, giving the impression that someone is at home, even though you’re halfway across the world.

Now, we know what you’re thinking. It’s a smart system, you could just connect to it from anywhere you are, and you can check if you locked your door, right? You can turn on the lights yourself. And while this is true, and certainly something you could take advantage of, what if you completely forget about these things? It does happen, and it’s nice to know that your door will be locked even if you never think about it twice.

Next up, you should take complete advantage of home automation. Yes, a schedule is useful, but you could also set up your smart lock to stay locked unless your phone is nearby and connected via Bluetooth, right? You can set your alarm to disarm automatically once you enter your predefined PIN code on your smart lock, too. If you aren’t doing this, you aren’t taking advantage of some of the key features of a smart home security system.

Last on our list of things to do is to regularly do maintenance checks. Once every couple of weeks should be enough, but definitely do a more thorough one every few months. This will ensure that your system is running well consistently, and there’s nothing wrong with it. If you’re halfway across the globe when you find out your system isn’t working well, there’s not much you can do, right?

What Shouldn’t You Do?

It can be easy to forget things with how complex home security systems have become, and therefore our first advice here would be to not forget fire and water alarms to your system. Your home shouldn’t be just protected from intruders, but from these kinds of hazards, too, and there’s no shortage of sensors available nowadays.

Next up, don’t forget to charge your smartphone and laptop. If you think about it, the main point of having a smart home security system relies on you keeping your smartphone and laptop charged. If their battery dies, how would you get access to the alarm remotely? How will your phone’s Bluetooth unlock your front door?

And last but not least, take advantage of the system, but don’t let yourself become dependent on it. Yes, such a system does give you a lot of peace of mind, as well as a lot of comforts, but you should remain vigilant. Just because you know your schedule will turn off your lights when it knows you’re asleep doesn’t mean you should leave them on all the time. Just because you have the comfort of locking your garage door even when you’re at the office, doesn’t mean you should leave it unlocked all the time. Take advantage of it, but don’t let yourself slip up.
